History of the Pirates

Pirates of the Warrior, Inc.

Pirate Logo

The Pirates of the Warrior Boating Club was created in 2004,

And in December 2005 became incorporated as a non-profit corporation. At present we are over 350 members strong.

Our purpose is as follows:

  • To promote recreational boating in the State of Alabama, and more specifically on the Black Warrior River;
  • To promote and provide recreational, civic, educational, cultural, and social opportunities for those who want to participate in recreational boating, specifically on the Black Warrior River.

In addition, we promote and perform community service in Tuscaloosa County, focusing on the river and surrounding areas, including, but not limited to, river and surrounding bank clean-up and road clean-up.

Fundraisers, including Charity Runs on the water, motorcycle rides, raffles, Womanless Beauty pageants, and picnics are held throughout the year to financially assist The Pirates in supporting many local, deserving non-profit charities and organizations.

Alabama vs. Arkansas Raft-up September 26, 2009

A lot more rolled on Saturday than the Crimson Tide football team in Tuscaloosa. 10 boats were rafted to the Old Lock # 12 wall for game day festivities. The Warrior River provided more excitement than some bargained for.

Streamflow Sept 26 09

We had a lot of rain that morning, but it stopped just before game-time. Near the end of the game, the stream flow increased by a factor of 6, and the river suddenly rose 6’. This put the river about 4’ from the top of the wall. "What Daze It?", "Willa-Gin", and "Empty Buckets" were rafted on the up-river part of the wall, in the bump-down steps created by the old gates of the lock. Because these steps are about 5’ below the rest of the lock wall, these 3 boats were forced to move as the river quickly covered the steps. There was plenty of room on the lower end of the wall.

All the boats closely monitored the river for the rest of the evening. The current and trash were creating problems for all. Logs and trees were drifting into the boats, requiring boat hooks and elbow grease to keep things cleared out.

Holt Dam Sept 27 09

The next two weeks have the Tide playing away from home, but they return Oct 17th for Homecoming, Tennessee Oct 24th, and LSU Nov 7th. Boat Alabama and Big Al plan to join the Pirates for all three of these games. Make plans to attend now!

Saturday, April 4, 2009
Tuscaloosa was treated to a visit from the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels & U.S. Army's Golden Knights parachute team, April 4-5, 2009, at the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport. Approximately 15 boats with over 80 guests and members of The Pirates of the Warrior boating club were wowed by the opportunity to view the show from the Old Oliver Lock and Dam on the Black Warrior River. Thanks to Alletha Sullivan for the comments and Will Stott for the photos!

Hello Pirates!
A General Meeting was held this past Sunday, February 8, to accept nominations for Officers for 2009.
The following individuals were nominated:
Ed Cook - President
Will Stott - Vice President
Melody Cook - Secretary/Treasurer
Since there were no other nominations in each category, the positions are unopposed and therefore no election is necessary.  These are your Pirate Officers for 2009.  Congratulations to them!
We will hold another General Meeting on March 1, 2009 at 2:30 pm at the Eagle Cove Restaurant to discuss and plan our 2009 Calendar of Events.  We hope you can attend as your input is valuable to us.
Thank you for your continued support of our great boat club!  We are looking forward to a fantastic 2009!
Until we meet again, remember...........It's GREAT to be a PIRATE!!

Old Lock # 9 Cleanup

The Pirates of the Warrior organized a clean-up of the Old Lock # 9 wall site on January 10, 2009. There were 8 Pirates members on the work detail, including Ed Cook, Jason Clark, Billy Sexton & Sandra, Steve Smith & Son, Wayne Thomas, and Paul Drummond. The weather was cool and windy on the selected Saturday. The work detail traveled by car to the Green County site, at river mile 293. Much talk had occurred to make the trip down-river by boat, but the weather that week dictated a more realistic plan! According to Pirate President, Ed Cook, "Old Lock # 9 has been overgrown now for years. On a recent trip from Mobile to Tuscaloosa, we tried to stop at the wall. Due to the overgrown condition of trees and shrubs, we had a difficult time tying off to one of the old cribs. We couldn’t even approach the lock wall."

The location of Old Lock # 9 is a critical stop for boats traveling from Demopolis to Tuscaloosa. The location is about halfway on the 122-mile trip, and boaters traveling at a non-planing, or more leisurely pace, will want a good stopping place. The clean-up project is just the kind of thing the Pirates want to do for the boating community. This may now make the trip to or from Tuscaloosa by boat easier. Isn’t it great to be a Pirate?

The Pirates got the ball rolling in late 2008, when they obtained an "axe permit" for the Old Lock # 9 property. This allowed the club to go in and clear trees, shrubs and the like using hand tools like axes and saws. This was no small project. The site was so overgrown, it was difficult to even spot the old lock wall from the river! It would have been impossible to tie a boat alongside the lock before the Pirate Crew finished the clean-up project. Now the top and side of the old lock wall is clear of vegetation, and tying up is again an option for boaters. "We’re happy to assist our members and traveling boaters by making the wall safe to tie alongside." said Wayne Thomas. "It was a big job, but we had a pretty good crew of Pirates to make it go smoothly."
